Ahhh, Saturday!

I think I'm going to emulate my dog today; he's always relaxed. I'm hanging out, making my to-do list for the day, listening to Dolly Parton sing "The Grass is Blue," and generally being glad that the work week is over. True, I won't be able to sleep quite as much as the ol' Beagle does, but there's that lovely lassitude that one can allow on Saturday morning, even while doing chores.

My senior students graduated last night, which was bittersweet; I think they'll appreciate Saturday most of all, because they had an emotionally exhausting week, and Saturday is the day they can take off all the graduation finery, put on the sweats, sit around, and say AHHH. At least that's what I'm going to do. :)

While I do that, I'm going to read more of Craig Johnson's THE COLD DISH, which is so far fascinating both in story and style. I've never read writing quite like his before, and he's got me hooked.

Have a relaxing Saturday, anyone reading this blog!

I relaxed with a good book this afternoon. Usually, I wait until my daughter is in bed before I do any serious reading, except for reading to or with her. But today, I poured a cup of tea and sat down with "When All the World Was Young" by Barbara Holland. It's the 3rd book I've read by her and it's a wonderful memoir. I finished it in two sittings and can't wait to read one of her other books. After that, I'll check out "The Cold Dish".

Sounds neat. You sound like a great mom. Who is Barbara Holland?

Barbara Holland is the author of fifteen books, all of them different and all of them gems. She combines a wicked sense of humor with the ability to convey a lot of factual information in a very entertaining way. I suggest "Hail to the Chiefs" for starters if you want to read something by her. She has a website, http://www.barbaraholland.net/.

I spent the weekend away in Wisconsin re-reading Jim Korkoris' novel, THE RICH PART OF LIFE. He happens to be a neighbor and his oldest son is a good friend of my son. Jim will soon (in June) be doing a book review for incoming freshmen at our high school...he has another son and I have a daughter who will be freshman. He also has written SR NORTH. THE RICH PART OF LIFE is about a Chicago family...father is a professor at Northwestern, mom has died a tragic death, dad plays her lottery numbers and wins! He has no clue how to deal with lots of money, two young sons who ask lots of questions, and all those who want his money. Fun book to read first and second time around. Just wanted to let you know that yes, we are still reading your blog...just a bit busy like you. AND, I've got 2 teenagers!

HI, Mary Beth. Oh, you poor woman. :) My son is on the verge of teen hood, and while I know it will bring many joys, I can see the pains much more clearly, since they are already foreshadowed in his behavior.

BUT we must celebrate our children, mustn't we?

I have to look up that book--what a great plot idea! Is it a mystery, or mainstream fiction?

Thanks for posting!

Okay, Lill, I'm checking out the website tonight!

Julia,
It's mainstream fiction, but has a fun Catholic bent to it for all of us who attended and/or teach at parochial schools. Jim is a great guy to know and some of his personal experiences of growing up in Chicago appear in his writing. You would like it.

The funny thing is, I think I've heard his name before--in fact I think I might have e-mailed him once or twice. Small world--I think he might even be friends with the former dean of our school. :)

Jim and I both live in the western suburbs...that's why I said the Forest Park bookstore, previously mentioned in your blog, was near enough for me to visit...just down Ogden Ave. to 1st Ave. Also, that is why John Dandola put me onto your blog. He must have known we live in nearby areas...although he also wanted me to read your interview with him. Are you familiar with Eric Rohmann, 3 years ago Caldicott winner for MY FRIEND RABBIT ? He also is a friend and neighbor. MY FRIEND RABBIT has been purchase by NBC for a fall lineup cartoon.
Getting back to Korkoris, he's a grad of UofI and has written humorous pieces for the Chicago Tribune. You may have seen his byline. Yep, small world...maybe some day we'll all meet!
BTW, have a great anniversary. Kudos for 19 years.
