Erma Bombeck on Patriotism

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."

--Erma Bombeck

Happy 4th of July!

Thank you, Julia! What a nice comment about patriotism. You can't go wrong with Erma Bombeck.

I agree--she's a favorite of mine. Happy 4th, Lesa!

Not to mention nitpicking over who is wearing a lapel pin and who isn't. And don't forget killing tens or maybe hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians for no good reason. I'd rather use my army in parades than invading other countries and then hold it against them if they decide to fight back.

Well, that seems more appropriate for my last post--plus Erma wasn't around when we invaded Iraq. She was in a more innocent America.

I'd discuss it more if I knew who you were. :)
