I found a terrific new website called World Mysteries, in which the little unexplained events, sights, and objects observed over thousands of years are presented for our inspection.
You can read about the surprising link between Egypt and the Americas, or about the Mesopotamian Tree of Life and its connection to DNA--the modern tree of life.
It's a very fun way to spend a couple of hours--remember, it is Saturday. We owe ourselves some fun.

Thanks for that! The first thing I looked at sparked an idea for my developing concept of a 'world without words'. Just jotted down a few more world-building aspects.
But it's Monday here already, so can't get sucked into this site just now.
Cool! But according to some rhetoricians, a world without words cannot exist--at least not our individual consciousnesses.

the gist of the idea is not without all words, but taking Farhenheit 451 further and doing away with all printed words. I've been spinning away on what a world like that would be like and have come up with a slew of ideas about religion, hidden books in places you wouldn't normally come up with, the power relationships, why the words were done away with, and how people change as a result of the lack of a printed language.
I've not written spec fic before, so this will be my first attempt. Since it's a big project, it will be a while before I get to it. Still have two mysteries to get through.
And I lied a little in my comment. I couldn't resist diving into that website and read some fascinating stuff about the Piri Reis map, which I knew of from a book I read about Columbus's trips to NA. But I hadn't seen it 'up close' before.
Fascinating! It sounds a little like 1984, too. It seems like a book I would like to read.
